Topic: Two Costly Illiteracies: Fiscal and Media
Speaker: Tom Proietti, Resident Scholar in Media, St. John Fisher College
As a nation, and maybe as a species, we are short-selling ourselves on two of the basic sets of competencies we need to negotiate our planet and our lives: fiscal literacy and media literacy. The two literacies are closely related and critical to our development as individuals and as crew members on Spaceship Earth. Tom Proietti argues that we are not only stuck in old curricula, we are actually going backward into the future by regressing into core competencies that are more politically correct than they are practical and realistic. In the financial arena, we have settled largely for tickling and titillation rather than substance and comprehension. How can we fix this? No easy fixes until we have a plan. Let’s start right here.
