John Bogle passed today. He was 89.

Jack founded mutual fund giant Vanguard and introduced the first index mutual fund: First Index Investment Trust. This fund is now known as the Vanguard 500 Index fund (VFIAX) and had over $400 billion in assets at the end of 2018. I am among the many who own shares in this fund.

In 2015, AAII awarded him the Cloonan Award for Excellence in Investor Education at our 2015 Investor Conference in Las Vegas. Jack was unable to join us at the conference, but graciously recorded two videos for us. The first video below includes his remarks on receiving the Cloonan Award, which was aired at the conference. The second is a video of his answers to our six investing questions, which were transcribed for a March 2016 AAII Journal article.

I was lucky enough to have the chance not only to meet Jack, but also to speak and correspond with him. I’ll share some my thoughts in tomorrow’s Investor Update email.
